Down with Dog Shows!

There are readers of a mild and sanguine disposition who probably think the opinions on this blog are excessively cynical and critical of contemporary American culture. Oh very well, live in your rose-colored dream world, if you must. But let's put your happy-spin to an empirical test: consider this year's winner of the Westminster Dog Show, and tell me that our society hasn't already gone past the tipping point.

Of all the weird looking dogs to choose from, did they have to pick one that looks like a rap star?

I'm with you on that one. Dogs are companions for humans, in my opinion. I hate how they doll up these dogs in the shows. Probably going to get some hate mail now. LOL.

Dog Shows & Smog Shows...they're as bad as Kiddy shows & Diddy shows. Diddy being the Rapper of course & Kiddies being Kiddies. Smog, what Smog..... I can's see a thing!!

Dog shows, cat shows, horse shows... even people shows (beauty pageants) are about the stupidest things going. In living creatures, there ain't no such thing as a "perfect specimen." Besides, we all know what they look like, right? Why do we need a show?

While I rant, I may as well mention the stupidity of car shows. All a car show does is prove people are stupid enough to invest 14 times what the car originally cost and put in years of sweat to bring it back to the condition it was when it took an hour and fifteen minutes to originally travel down the assembly line.

I, for one, do not believe you are "excessively cynical and critical." Perhaps that's simply a coincidence.
Bobbie and I both gasped when that photo came on the news... "Is that the best they can do?" What was that dog bred to do any way? What ever it is, it's long gone.
Pekinese lapdog. Maybe it did well on the Chinese civil service exams and became a powerful adviser and courtier (groan) to the Emperor.

When the AKC show opened in New York, I noted a piece that the Mexican Hairless (Xolo) is is now a recognized AKC breed. Hang on. It will be the over all winner at next years show. What ever happened to working dogs. What ever happened to a dog as a pet. Todays dogs appear to have been bred to meet some artists ideal of an animal which bears little resemblance to a dog -- or its ancestors.

The same thing is done in the breeding of horses. Breeding for looks (meeting a judges criteria) rather than a horse that could be used for anything other than a show piece.
