When Your Opponent Learns Something

Either political party is playing a whole new game when its opponent actually learns from its mistakes and reforms itself.

The GOP used to benefit from the sheer obstinacy of foolish Democrats who, it was often said, 'liked full employment, but disliked employers.' The Democrats outgrew some of that during the New Democrat era, and finally got one of theirs (Clinton) into the White House for two complete terms, the first such achievement since Roosevelt.

After the initial "rally 'round the Flag" era was over in the early Aughts of this century, the Democrats have benefited from the Neo-con domination of the Republican party: it meant that the first thing you think of when you hear the word 'GOP' is dismal, futile, expensive, and eternal wars in the Middle East, at a time when the finances and economy of the USA need serious attention.

Evidence builds up every few days that the Republicans have finally outgrown this stupidity, and if I were a Democrat I'd be nervous. For instance there was a recent essay by George Will, a one-time Neo-con lackey, that was against McCain and his permanent war policy. It was also an example of how people who ignore politics because it seems ugly and cynical never experience the bliss of seeing something get better.

Nothing less will save the Republican party than a Stalin-style purge of Neo-cons.
