Conspiracy theories have never interested me and I look down on those who are into them. So it's with some reluctance that I admit that there seems to be something fishy with the recent killing of Osama bin Laden and the recently announced (painfully gradual) draw-down of troops from Afghanistan.
Isn't it just possible that the American Imperium could have killed bin Laden years ago, but didn't want to. After all, as long as the great Bogeyman was out there somewhere, the public would feel Fear, and we all know how governments benefit from public fear. The War on Terror is just version 2.0 of the Cold War; it's intended to be a permanent entitlement program for the military sector of the economy.
But in the middle of 2011 the pollsters probably told Obama that Permanent War is starting to irritate too many voters, and that they'd rather see the government focus on unemployment and a punk economy. So perhaps Obama finally decided that it was time to take out Osama, to provide the political cover for easing out of Middle Eastern PermaWars.
