So, the last hurrah of summer is over. The last holiday, that is. There weren't many weekenders and vacationers in my area (central Idaho) so I am not as relieved as usual, at the end of summer.
It is an ironic time to consider that campers can be charming in their own way. Give a (non-RV) camper a knife, some kind of digging tool, a length of paracord, rubber hose, and bucket; and then come back in six months. You might be surprised what they have come up with. Humans are delightful when they play backyard inventor. Think of children fashioning toys out of things lying around in their environment.
It is true that this blog seldom discusses the practical issues of camping. It robs camping of its charm to spoon-feed how-to tips to other campers. But I will discuss one practical issue just because it has lasted so long for me, and there is some humor to it.
For years I have gone through a series of unsatisfactory shower pans. (I don't have room for a permanent shower stall.) The pan must be easy to store when not in use. Consider the rope that holds the shower curtain to the ceiling.
Then again, maybe you shouldn't consider it. For years I have used round pans of metal, plastic, and even a folding doggie pool. I just couldn't get the idea of roundness out of my mind.
The human mind can be stubborn. If I had looked at it from a camera mounted above my head, I would have noticed that the human form is rectangular, rather than round. A rectangular box could have been easily fashioned out of thin plywood, and made waterproof with a little paint and caulking.
Here's another way to make a waterproof, rectangular box:
Plastic tubs like this are easily purchased. And they can be stacked out of the way or give you more storage. Once again, the mind gets stubborn. The wall of separation just doesn't seem 'right', even though you are just standing there -- you aren't dancing. Won't water leak in the crack? Putting a garbage over the crack is so ugly.
These tubs work perfectly. I didn't even have to buy anything. So why did I resist this solution for so long?
